If you are interested in HCI on mobile, this is kind of article you should read.
Their study was focusing following questions:
- Which text entry method provides the fastest and most accurate text entry?
- Which text entry method receives the highest satisfaction and ease of use ratings?
- How do first-time experiences compare across text entry methods?
- What aspects of text entry user interfaces do smartphone users particularly like or dislike?
- What can be done to make text entry more accurate and less aggravating?
One of their finding was that user’s preference and performance are strongly affected by their expertise on specific method, and all methods requires some time for training to get used to it. My recent study on input devices is reaching similar conclusion too. All of my participants did better on their preferred input method (Mouse or Trackpad, or these input device with Multi-touch gesture), and their preference also went on their familiar input method.
Therefore, to determine what’s better, further question might be
“What kind of method can be minimize user’s amount of learning effort to reach certain expertise level?”
